Name: M’yran (mai-run)
Nicknames: Kairan, Mik, Meer
Former Name: Mikyran (mik-ai-run)
Age: 19 Turns
Gender: Supposedly male, although technically ‘he’ is female. He’s mentally certain that he is a male and doesn’t even acknowledge the fact his body is female.
Sexuality: Attracted to men, despite thinking he himself is male, most likely due to the female side of his nature - technically heterosexual.
Rank: Weyrling
Family: Mother - Lakyra, unknown background (deceased)
Father - Mikal, formerly M’kal of brown Struth (Lives at Southern Hold)
Birthplace: Southern Weyr
Physical Appearance:
Being rather androgynous in appearance, most people would be at a loss to place Mikyran’s gender - some would say ‘she’ is a very masculine girl whilst others would say that he is a very feminine boy. As it is, Meer would always concur with the latter and berates anyone who thinks otherwise. After all, he is a ‘boy’, so why should anyone else think differently?
Mik is neither skinny nor is he exactly, which adds to the androgynous nature of his appearance. Due to a gene defect, he experienced the growth spurt of puberty, but has never actually started his monthly bleeding or developed breasts. This makes him almost certain that he is a boy, and it means that he is fairly flat chested, except for the small amount of muscle starting to build up from the work he does around Weyr and hold. In height he is about 5’6”, so again, he could be mistaken for either gender as it isn’t endearing to either.
His hair has a somewhat startling effect for a first impression, and it is often the thing that reminds people of him. It is dyed from being a medium brown colour to a dark blood red using the dye extracted from redroots. It’s cropped very short at the back, from behind the ears and is quite fuzzy. In contrast, his fringe is fairly long, reaching into his eyes, although this doesn’t bother him. He has even longer tails of hair just behind his fringe that reach to his shoulders.
Mikyran’s eyes are another oddity - although at first glance they are both a fairly pale silver colour, the left has a dash of amber running from the centre of the pupil to flood the bottom half of the iris. This is mostly likely again due to the gene defect. His skin is also fairly pale despite the hot sun of the continent he has lived in all of his life. He burns very easily and rarely tans, so he has to frequently slather himself with numbweed.
The young lad generally wears light, airy shirts to keep himself cool in the hot Southern sun. Because of his tendency to burn, he mostly wears long sleeved shirts only. In contrast, his trousers are very nearly always made of leather, because it is what he feels comfortable in, even in the heat. Mik’s favourite colours are light blues, whites, reds that match his hair and darker maroons that almost verge on purple.
Personality:
In a word, Mikyran can be described as odd. His personality can vary greatly and almost in the blink of an eye, all dependant on his moods, because at the heart of his nature, that’s what he is; moody. And this tends to be the aspect that is most apparent to everyone else, as he can flip from being bright and cheerful to sullen in a moment if someone says something to annoy him.
When he isn’t being all solemn, Kyran is generally quite good company to be in. He has an unwitting sense of humour and can make many people laugh without even trying to. He makes friends very easily as he is fairly bubbly and will hold a conversation with practically anyone, so long as the topic is somewhat intellectual. After all, it needs to hold his attention. He has a way with words that means he can usually get himself out of any dilemma. If he ever felt like it, he’d probably be considered a smooth talker by the ladies as quick as he is to dish out the compliments; though he tends to offer them to the guys instead.
However easily he makes friendships, they seem to just as easily broken again - he has a tendency to lash out at people when he’s in a bad mood, although it is usually verbally instead of physically. When this happens, what he says is designed to be hurtful, deep cutting and personal. As a result, very few people forgive him. Kyran has a very sharp tongue when he’s angry or upset purely because he doesn’t know how to deal with the emotions any other way - he certainly won’t cry over whatever it was to put him in that mood.
There are days when he wants nothing more than to be alone, musing and writing his poetry and small stories that he is always dreaming up. Other days he is like the most inquisitive of fire lizards, constantly popping up all over the place, learning as much as he can and asking almost insatiable questions.
Meer loves to learn new things and over the past 19 turns, has acquired a vast store of knowledge that he hopes will be useful one day - even the most trivial thing has some value, even if only to make interesting conversation.
History:
Kyran’s mother turned up at Southern Weyr out of the blue, unannounced and completely unexpected. The poor woman seemed not to remember where she had come from, nor anything else save that her name was Lakyra and she was looking for a man named Mikal. Her appearance was decidedly peculiar as the day prior, the brown dragon Struth betweened for no apparent reason, leaving his rider, M’kal on the verge of insanity. The moment that the woman sat beside the bereft rider and started talking to him, gently stroking her fingers through his hair, the man became calm and slept.
As he recovered, her claimed Lakyra as his weyrmate, as the weyrwoman had graciously allowed them to remain at the weyr. Over the next few turns, they began to piece Lakyra’s memory back together. Although she still couldn’t remember where she came from, it turned out that Struth had contacted her when he was overcome by a sickness that showed no physical signs. The illness took a hold of his mind, clawing at his sanity. Lakyra, for some reason, had been the one he’d called out to during his strife, and upon whom he placed the duty of giving his rider reason to live once the great brown dragon had gone. Thus Lakyra’s strange appearance was explained, quelling any and all superstitious rumour about her.
Five turns since she’d lived at the weyr, she gave birth to a daughter, Mikyra. The first seven turns of her life passed pretty normally, despite the odd colouring of her eyes. However, the young girl didn’t act like a girl at all. She detested dolls, refused to wear dresses, and hated the chattering gossip that all other girls her age seemed to indulge in; completely adamant that it wasn’t the right thing for someone like her. Instead, she insisted on wearing trousers and running around topless, catching spider claws down the beach with her friends - all of whom were boys themselves - and she even hacked her long hair off to look like them.
Her parents allowed it for a few turns, but the closer she got to puberty, the more distraught they became. Their daughter had turned out to be more of a son, insisting that she was male, and as such, her name should be Mikyran to suit it. Despite their attempts to explain that in a few turns her body would start to look like other womens, trying to prove that she was in fact a girl, Mikal and Lakyra failed to persuade her.
As it was, puberty never really happened for her. After living in the Weyr all her life, she had gained a little muscle on her arms and legs and by the age of 15, looked more like the lad she insisted she was. She experienced a growth spurt, gaining a few inches in height, but never began to develop breasts, or start the monthly cycles as most women do. This furthered his claims that he was male and he insisted that everyone else see him as such. The MasterHealer was called for. He revealed that Mikyran had a gene defect - evident by the leaking of colour in his eye and the pale hue of his skin - that caused ‘him’ to mentally believe that he was male. Furthermore, this defect had stopped the body from producing hormones in a large enough amount to trigger the onset of puberty. It was extremely rare he said, but not completely unheard of.
Their minds put somewhat at rest, Mikyran’s parents, along with most of the weyr, began to accept the condition, gently correcting strangers who saw him as a girl. Unfortunately, the person who accepted him most took ill with firehead - his mother. The raging fever left her frail and sickly. It wasn’t long before his 18th birthday when she passed away.
Unable to remain at Southern Weyr, his grief moved Kyran to Vyrzen Hold to offer his services as a messenger and to assist the watch dragon’s rider when he required it. Naturally he attracted the attention of the bullies of the Hold, but his glib tongue usually ended up ripping great holes in their self esteem whilst he walked always unscathed.
At 19 and a half turns, Mikyran was still living at Vyrzen hold when T'rin and Jade Ophith came and took him away to the Weyr - just in time as well as the touching the following day turned into a nightmarish hatching. It was then that he bonded with Maereth, the copper dragon who thinks she is a male.
