Name: Nwalme (Nwahl-may)
Gender: Female
Sexuality: Bisexual, erring more towards homosexual
Age: 18 Turns
Rank: Weyrling
Family:
Father - N’ren, Rider of brown Kyetmarth at High Reaches Weyr
Mother - Awamina, Rider of green Aelth (Deceased)
Birthplace: High Reaches Weyr
Appearance:
Weyrlife has had its effect on Nwalme’s physical features, because despite looking quite skinny, carrying sacks of firestone for the riders means that she has some serious strength behind her. This is something which the girl uses to her advantages – her lithe appearance does not betray her strength, so in a scuffle, she will always have the upper hand. Combined with her height, 5’9”, and when visible, her musculature gives her an odd sort of beauty – barely there, yet subtly hinting at a hidden power.
She doesn’t have a typical ‘womanly’ figure, being slightly less rounded in the hip than most, and having a slightly smaller bust than average, but this doesn’t stop her receiving appraising looks from every holder’s son and fosterling. It is this attention that causes her to wear dark silvery grey dyed wher-hide trousers with a very loose-fitting tunic over the top, to hide her appearance. The colours of her preference tend to be dusky reds or purples.
Nwalme’s eyes are mainly a cloudy grey-blue colour, and around the pupil is a darker grey ring, spreading outwards towards the edge of her irises in an almost star-like shape. In proportion to her face, her eyes are relatively average in size and are not too far apart. They are slightly almond shaped, though without the slant that would denote ancient Asian heritage.
Even though many women in the Weyr crop their hair short, Nwalme’s luxurious tresses reach almost to the base of her shoulder blades in a wave of white-blonde, occasionally dashed through with sandier tones. She has a side parting and her hair is usually allowed to hand loose about her shoulders, although on really windy days, or days she is just annoyed with it, she will twirl it up into a rather messy knot at the back of her head, held in place with a small hinged clip.
The girl’s skin is probably paler than most would expect, especially as she has spent the last 2 Turns at Vyrzen Weyr in the hot Southern sun. Her lips are a lighter version of a damask pink colour, and her nose is slightly upturned at the end, although the latter is hardly noticeable.
Personality:
Nwalme is generally a quiet girl, as keeps to herself a lot. This is due to the fact that many of the boys at her previous Weyr had tormented her about her ‘preferences’, and she found that it was generally easier to ignore when she stayed out of the way. It takes a while for this girl to start trusting new people she meets, and as a result, in her two Turns at this Weyr, she hasn’t spoken to many people, short of the Headwoman and her parents when they come to visit. To others, she appears to be somewhat cold and distant, with some even going as far as to think that she just dislikes company.
Because of this main facet of her personality, she enjoys spending time down at the beach on her own, watching the flitters all playing together, both the wild and those who look to people within the hold and weyr. She also enjoys night time walks, when there aren’t any clouds in the sky. Nwalme has a deep sense of tranquillity, and is the happiest when everything around her is calm.
The inner Nwalme is kind and caring, once you get past the frigid exterior of her character. She will help with almost anything, although once or twice, this has gotten her into trouble for helping the wrong people. When she has had friends, she has been utterly devoted to them, and completely loyal.
Even though the girl was Weyrbred, she still has some reservations about dragonflight – in light of her ambiguous sexuality, Nwalme would prefer to have one (potentially 2 maximum in her life) stable lover, who would stay with her because they loved her, not because their dragons had seen each other as worthy of mating.
History:
The beginning twelve Turns of Nwalme’s life were those of a typical Weyrbrat: poking around the dusty old corners of the High Reaches Weyr, sneaking off to Gathers at Tillek to swipe as many bubbly pies as possible and of course, getting in trouble for both. As a child, the girl had been rather boisterous and loud, often in trouble with her foster mother, Bronna for one thing or the other. Many of her friends had been the male weyrbrats of her weyr – they were far more fun than the girls who would rather help their mothers sew or brew numbweed! It was regularly that she needed that numbweed though, for scrapes and scratches, but this was all to change.
There had been an incident that estranged her from all of the boys of the weyr when she was almost thirteen Turns of age. Her best friend, Tikara, was excused from her usual duties in the lower caverns and the two girls had run down to the beach to play in the warm waters. It was a few days before her thirteenth birthday, so they planned to get away before her foster mother could begin ordering her around to prepare for it. Stripping down to their shifts, the two girls splashed around for a while, until the sun began to get low in the sky, then they retreated to the beach to dry off.
Lying side by side with Tikara was hard for Nwalme – because of her age, her emotions and feelings were all changing; especially towards her best friend. Rolling over to face the tan girl next to her, Nwalme had pulled her close to hesitantly kiss the girl. To her amazement, Kara responded in the same manner. The two delighted in the fact that their previous fears had been dispelled, relishing the touch of the other, but this joy was short lived. Stones and twigs began to rain down on them, along with the jeering insults of the other weyrbrats.
The next year was hard for Nwalme because she avoided Tikara, to try to discourage the rumours. Not speaking to the one you love is hard, but avoiding them altogether is harder. If she knew that Tikara would be in the kitchens, she’d find work with the herdsman to be doing, or if she knew that the other girl would be cleaning the rider’s weyrs, Nwalme made sure that she was preparing food.
Making it all the harder, she also found that she felt an attraction to Thaion, one of her friends who had seen her together on the beach. The betrayal she felt for liking someone else was immense, perhaps even more so because he was a boy. Despite trying to keep it to herself, it must have been obvious whenever she was around him, because somehow the other warrants found out and began to call her a freak and unnatural because she liked both men and women.
When she Turned 16, a scarlet rider from Vyrzen Weyr spotted her when on a visit to High Reaches on Weyr business. He noted her plight when some of the candidates had her in one of the corridors, jeering and taunting her until she had collapsed into a corner, sobbing her heart out. Eventually he coaxed her into telling him the problem, and offered to take her to his Weyr if she was willing to help there. The girl accepted, hoping that moving away would alleviate the bullying she was experiencing.
Nwalme’s transferral to Vryzen Weyr came as a huge relief – obviously rumours may have spread this far, but if they had, who would believe them? It afforded her a fresh start. No one mentioned what had happened at High Reaches to her, and better still, stil wasn’t bullied because of it. Still, for the last two Turns, she kept to the huts that acted as the lower caverns of her previous weyr had. In this time, she learnt from a resident MasterHealer as much knowledge as he could pass on to her in her spare time, and she proved to be a competent healer. It wasn’t until shortly after her 18th birthday that a rider had noticed her and commented that she would be eligible as a candidate.
Dragon
Name: Partheluth
Age: Hatchling
Colour: Jade
Appearance:
Partheluth is relatively normal when it comes to his physical appearance, with a single exception – his fore legs are about a foot longer than most other dragons’. This obviously makes walking somewhat awkward for the dragon, but as he grows he will probably find it easier and easier to walk more gracefully. His size is a bit larger than that of the average Jade, with wings that match this nicely – his current wingspan is about three hands wider than normal, to better distribute his weight.
His hide is a beautiful dark Jade colour, verging almost on black in some areas, although when the light shines on him, they too are evidently a green hue. His hide has a slight iridescent sparkle to it, which is a trait of all Jade’s that distinguishes them from common greens. The thin membrane of his wings is opaque in colour and mainly the same hue as the rest of his hide – with a much, much lighter shade of mint green swirling through the bottom edges of the wingsail. The claws at the end of the wingtips are a bright ivory colour, as are his teeth and claws on his feet, making a great contrast between his hide.
Partheluth’s ridges are more like a huge ruff that trails down his back and is multi-layered rather than a single row of ridges. These are the same colour as the rest of his hide, and they stop where they meet the wing muscles, leaving the rest of his back and tail smooth. He has two medium length horns that protrude form his head, just above his eye ridge that are also ivory in colour. Currently they are very small, but will grow to about 3 feet when he is fully grown.
Personality:
Like his rider, Partheluth is a very quiet dragon, although not because he is shy, just that he feels words are sometimes wasted. However, when he wants to be heard, he WILL make his point known, as usually it is fairly important. He prefers to listen, rather than to speak, learning about everyone around him before he judges them.
The jade dragon is very calm and serene, disliking large amounts of noise. He often leaves places where he knows there will be a commotion to go and find his favourite ledge and look for shapes in the clouds. He enjoys it when His joins him, as he likes to bond with the people he is close to on a one-to-one basis.
Partheluth is extremely loyal, defending his rider and friends to the very end. If he has to, he will use his size to stop the confrontation, although he hates doing this as he sees throwing his weight around as an underhanded tactic. If things have gone wrong he would rather talk than use muscle.
Due to his quiet nature, he is very thoughtful. He likes to spend time on making a decision if at all possible and he hates doing things spur of the moment. Later in life he will be very careful as to his choice of mate, taking Nwalme’s fears and needs into consideration as much as his own.
